Primary School Work in French Life

October 16th, 2009 . by admin

In Great Britain, there’s often talk of a French way of life which seems to involve lazy and arrogant workers with an addiction to strikes and Public Holidays. I’m not sure how this vision of French Life has arisen. In fact it seems to me that there’s quite a serious emphasis on work from an early age. Children stagger to primary school bent under the weight of hefty backpacks or bags on wheels that turn stubborn at kerb edges; they go home at about 5pm if they’re lucky – others stay in the garderie which may allow them to get on with their homework. Those who have already escaped home may face three or four not insubstantial homeworks at the tender age of 7 or 8. No wonder there are a lot of staring eyes in pale faces in the mornings at French nursery and primary schools.
